Awe and Grandfield take wins in singles play, Lakers fall 7-2

GRAND RAPIDS - Lake Superior State women's tennis suffered their seventh straight loss on Friday at the hands of Davenport University 7-2. The Lakers (0-7, 0-6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) gained a pair of singles wins with Sarah Awe and Allison Grandfield but were shutout in doubles play and couldn't secure any other singles victories.

Awe, a senior from Washington Township, Mich., earned her third singles victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Puck Luttikhuis in the No. 1 slot.

Grandfield won her second singles match as Laker on Friday. Playing in the No. 6 singles position opposite Ashley Medcoff, Grandfield earned a three-set 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Jenay Andrews, a freshman from Fort Wayne, Ind., had her sight set on her first collegiate victory but was upended in a three-set tilt. Playing in the No. 5 singles slot, Andrews fell 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 to Hannah Murphy.

In the No. 2 singles position Tara Harvey took her opponent to the wire before ultimately falling 7-6, 7-6.

The Lakers return home next weekend for a pair of GLIAC matches. The Lakers play Hillsdale College on Saturday and Wayne State on Sunday. Both matches will start at 10 a.m. and be held at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center inside of the Norris Center. Admission is free to all LSSU tennis matches.
