Lomacka wins first two matches at ITA Regional


MIDLAND - Junior Weronika Lomacka won her first two singles matches before falling to No. 4 seed Sharon Gill of Wayne State at the ITA Great Lakes Women's Division II Championship -- a three-day collegiate tennis event.

Lomacka, who plays No. 2 singles for Lake Superior State, opened with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Ferris State's Ann Grant. She also beat No. 14 seed Megan Farley of Indianapolis, 6-1, 6-0. Lomacka lost to Gill, 6-0, 6-2.

LSSU's No. 1 singles player, freshman Ingrid Pflieger, was seeded ninth. She received a first-round bye and suffered a tough second-round loss to Wayne State's Kristina Garanskava, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.

Laker freshman Adrienne DiVito opened with a 6-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Aly Neidlinger of Indianapolis, and lost to Ferris State's Amy Ingle, 6-1, 6-2, during the second round. Ingle was seeded 11th.

In other singles matches, Ashland's Paola Orazco, who was seeded 12th, defeated LSSU's Erin Wiethoff, 6-1, 6-0; Northwood's Nicole Kromer beat LSSU's Carolyn Pumford, 6-1, 6-0; and Wayne State's Meghan Luzod edged Laker Gaby Juan-Alladio, 7-5, 6-1.

DiVito and Pumford notched LSSU's first doubles win of the season by beating Meghan Teunis and Maggie Ashby of Indianapolis, 8-4. The Laker duo lost in the second round to No. 5 seed Ingle and Tiffany Rheynard of Ferris State, 8-5.

Lomacka and Pflieger, who were seeded seventh, received a first-round bye, then lost to Grand Valley State's Jackie Shipman and Katelyn Schaffer, 8-2. Juan-Alladio and Wiethoff lost in the first round to Northwood's Kromer and Sabrina Kihm, 8-0.
