Finlandia announces Dome Tournament Champions and All-Tournament honors

HANCOCK, Mich. - Lake Superior State softball was announced the champions of the 2016 Finlandia Dome Tournament held back on February 26-28 at the Superior Dome on the campus of Northern Michigan University. Lake Superior State was one of four teams at the annual softball tournament to produce a 3-1 record on the weekend and earned the title of tournament champions after an examination of total runs scored and runs against.

The Lakers scored a tournament-high 42 runs during their four-game schedule and allowed only 18 runs on the weekend.

Finlandia University also released the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award and the list of players named to the All-Tournament Team on Wednesday. For the second consecutive year, the MVP was awarded to Simpson College's senior catcher, Tori Haag. Haag led all players with 9 runs scored and 9 RBI on the weekend.  Haag had 15 total bases with .429 batting average and a .714 slugging percentage for the Storm. 

LSSU freshman infielder Katey Hendershott was named to the All-Tournament Team after producing six hits in nine at bats with a double, triple, and home run during the weekend. Hendershott also scored four runs, drove in seven runs, collected three walks and totaled 12 bases on the weekend. The Ortonville, Mich., native also produced a 1.333 slugging percentage to go along with a .750 on-base percentage during the tournament.

The Lakers were scheduled to play Ferris State on Wednesday April 6, but due to inclement weather, the doubleheader has been postponed with no makeup date currently announced. The team is scheduled to travel to play Lake Erie College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and Ashland at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
