Banchiu tabbed as GLIAC Softball Player of the Week

BAY CITY, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its first weekly softball awards for the 2016 season. Wayne State junior pitcher Lyndsay Butler captured GLIAC Pitcher of the Week honors, while Lake Superior State junior first baseman Carly Banchiu collected GLIAC Player of the Week accolades.

Banchiu, a junior from Waterford, Mich. led the Lakers (3-1) with a tremendous offensive output in four games last weekend at the Finlandia Dome Tournament.

For the weekend, Banchiu produced a .636 batting average, two home runs and seven RBIs. Banchiu also scored seven runs, drew two walks, and produced a 1.182 slugging percentage.

A 2015 All-GLIAC Honorable Mention as a sophomore, Banchiu doubled her entire 2015 home run output during a 19-2 victory Edgewood College on Sunday. Against the Eagles Banchiu hit two home runs and drove in six RBIs while going 5-for-5 at the plate.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Thayer, also a native of Waterford, Mich., was nominated as a GLIAC Pitcher of the Week candidate following her part in the victory over Edgewood.

The Lakers travel to The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. this week for 12 games in eight days. While the Lakers will face GLIAC rivals Ferris State at The Spring Games this week, LSSU officially starts the GLIAC schedule March 25 at Hillsdale.
