Lakers drop doubleheader in Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich.- Lake Superior State softball opened a Friday double header with a 6-3 loss against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Hillsdale College before losing 10-1 in the second game of the day's doubleheader.

The Chargers (7-3, 2-0 GLIAC) received a home run from from Bekah Kasting to center field in the bottom of the first during the first game to take a 1-0 lead. Haley Lawrence drove in Kelsey Gockman in the bottom of the fourth to put HC up 2-0.

The Lakers (4-14, 0-2 GLIAC) responded in the top of the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs. Katie Martin grounded into a double play to score Katey Hendershott from third and advanced Teryin Williams to third base. Emily Estep tied the game in the next at bat with an RBI single, scoring Williams.

Amanda Marra doubled in a run and later scored in the bottom half of the fifth to put the Chargers back up by two runs.

Williams hit a two-out single to center field to score Carly Banchiu in the top of the sixth, cutting the lead to 4-3, but the Lakers were unable to find the tying run as the Chargers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Sarah Grunert (W, 5-0) pitched a complete game for the Chargers, allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters. Alyssa Boucher (L, 1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing six runs, despite only three being earned.


Hillsdale opened the second game with a six-run inning in the top of the first playing as the visitors. With the bases loaded and one out, Amanda Marra singled to right to drive in two runs to set up runners on first and second. Gockman then singled to load the bases and Danielle Garceau drew a walk to drive in Cassie Asselta. The Chargers capped the inning with an unearned run on a passed ball and an RBI single by Ainsley Ellison for the team's fourth hit and sixth run of the inning.

The Chargers added a run in the second inning and two more in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.

Boucher singled to right field to score Lindsey Pajot and put the Lakers on the board in the bottom half of the fourth but that proved to be all the LSSU batters could muster.

Katie Kish scored on an error in the top of the fifth to put Hillsdale up 10-1 and the Lakers were unable to extend the game after failing to rally in the bottom half of the fifth.

The Lakers travel to Findlay on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. to cap the weekend road trip.
