Lake Superior State softball dropped their only game on Tuesday, a 7 p.m. start against Sioux Falls, 7-2. The Lakers (4-11) did well to tie the game in the top of the third inning but could not contain the Cougars (10-4) from scoring four runs in the bottom half of the third inning to open things up.

After a run crossed the plate for the Cougars during each of the first two innings, the Lakers  brought the game even in the top of the third inning with the help of two defensive errors by USF. Katie Martin reached first and advanced to second on a error by the center fielder to lead off the inning. Emily Estep then scored Martin with the help of a throwing error during her bunt single. The errant throw helped Martin score and advanced Estep to put the tying run in scoring position.

Sophomore Teryn Williams delivered the tying run on the next at bat with a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield. Estep scored on the play but the Lakers were unable to convert runners on the corners with one out to extend the inning and went to the bottom of the third tied 2-2.

The Cougars delivered four runs in the bottom half of the inning, started by a double steal with runners on the corners. While Shannon Daly was called out at second base, Danielle Walker safely swiped home.

During the same at bat, Betsy Thomas later delivered a solo home run to put the Cougars up 4-2. The next two batters each doubled to add another run and that was when starting pitcher Alyssa Bouchor's (L, 1-1) night would come to a close on the mound. Bouchor was tagged for six runs in 2.1 innings and struck out one batter.

One more run cam in to finish the third inning and the Cougars also added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to come away with the final 7-2 decision.

Breanna Black (W, 5-2) pitched six innings allowing two runs (1 earned) on four hits, and three walks. Black also picked up one strikeout in the victory. Alyson Netty came in to relive Black in the top of the seventh inning and struck out the side to close the door on any attempts at a Lakers comeback.
