Lakers pick up a power hitter and three pitchers

SAULT STE. MARIE - Pitchers Christine Larkin of Madison Heights-Bishop Foley, Nicole Stein of Tawas and Jordan Christie of Bath have signed National Letters of Intent to play softball at Lake Superior State University. LSSU coach Don Myers will also bring in Grand Rapids Community College power hitter Ashley Snider.

Stein, a protégée of well-known pitching coach Doug Gillis, helped lead Tawas High School to a Division 2 district title in 2009. The four-time All-North East Michigan Conference honoree had career totals of 96 wins, 37 losses, 31 shutouts, 1.29 earned run average and 1,057 strikeouts. Opposing hitters had a .110 batting average against Stein, who earned her third straight all-region honor and all-state honorable mention.

"Nikki has good control and can throw a drop, change and rise ball to compliment her 59-61 mph speed," LSSU coach Don Myers said. "Her off-speed pitch is in the mid-40s. She can also play other positions and should help us on the mound in the years to come."

Larkin (Troy, Mich.) had a 9-13 record and 2.79 ERA for Bishop Foley in 2009. She totaled 163 strikeouts with 33 walks. She is also a career .400 hitter who earning three All-Catholic League honors and helped lead Bishop Foley to three Division 3 district titles. This season, she batted .438 with one home run, 39 hits and a .528 slugging percentage. Larkin has a 4.2 grade point average, earned academic all-state honors and also lettered in swimming.

Christie (East Lansing, Mich.) was 24-6 with a 1.15 ERA for Division 3 district champion Bath High School. She is a two-time All-Central Michigan Athletic Conference First-Team selection and Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association Academic All-State player. She totaled 243 strikeouts in 2009.

"Christine is also a good hitter and should add versatility to our lineup," Myers said. "Jordan is 5-10 and able to twist the ball pretty well. She will come into her own as she develops more pitches."

Snider (Muskegon, Mich.) played her rookie collegiate season at Muskegon Community College before setting a GRCC school record of 14 single-season home runs in 2009. She batted .362 with 42 hits, 39 RBIs and a .767 slugging percentage. She was ranked among the top 20 on the NJCAA Division II home run list. Snider is a 2007 graduate of Mason County Central where she was a three-time Division 3 all-state third baseman.

"We need a power hitter, and Ashley should be able to give us the long ball at crucial times," Myers said.

LSSU's 2009-10 recruiting class also includes Alpena catcher Nikki Preuss, who led the Wildcats to their second straight Division 1 district title this spring. She committed to the Lakers during the Fall 2008 signing period.
