Lakers stay even with GVSU in hitting column


ALLENDALE - Lake Superior State and Grand Valley State, meeting for the fourth and fifth time on the softball diamond this season, were dead even in total hits during Sunday's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference double-header. Both teams totaled 12 hits as GVSU won, 2-1 and 6-2.

GVSU (25-8 overall, 5-3 GLIAC) scored two runs in the fourth inning on three hits and an error to win the opener. LSSU pitcher Nikki Christensen held GVSU to four hits and one earned run. Lacey Knoop walked and scored LSSU's lone run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Lorrie Chaperon.

Christensen totaled five strikeouts and no walks while going the distance. Nichole Dunford was 2-for-3 at the plate, and Helena Zandarski was 1-for-3. GVSU pitcher Lori Andjelich struck out four and walked two.

Rachel Hall and Chevie Peralta-Everts were both 2-for-3 as LSSU held a 9-8 hitting edge in Game 2. Knoop, Chaperon, Zandarski, Nicole Carstensen and Christensen added one hit each. Hall was credited with both RBIs for the Lakers.

Jillian Willette pitched a seven-hitter and allowed only two earned runs through 4.2 innings. She totaled three strikeouts and two walks. Christensen entered the game in the fifth inning and allowed one hit. GVSU broke open a scoreless deadlock with four runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth.

LSSU (6-27 overall, 0-10 GLIAC) plays another twinbill against GVSU on Monday in Allendale.
