Laker Women's Basketball Face Setback Against SVSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's basketball team (1-22, 0-14 GLIAC) fell to the Saginaw Valley State (SVSU) Cardinals (9-16, 6-9 GLIAC) by a final score of 69-61 on Saturday despite a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double from Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich.).

Gracey Metz (Hartland, Mich.) opened up the scoring with a three from the corner, but the Cardinals responded to tie up the game with an and-one. SVSU was able to pull ahead, but back-to-back baskets from Amanda Roach (Hartland, Mich.) kept the Lakers within striking distance after the first ten minutes of action. However, despite a clutch three from the top of the key by Brittany Bowman (Kingsley, Mich.) the Lakers found themselves trailing going into the halftime break.

The Cardinals were attacking early in the second half, building their lead to as many as 20 points, but the Lakers came storming back, hitting deep three after deep three to crawl their way back with Taylor Stacy (Toledo, Ohio) contributing 11 points in the quarter to have her team back within ten to start the fourth quarter. However, SVSU was ultimately able to survive, holding on for the victory.

Bradford led the way with 17 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks, all of which were game-highs. Meanwhile, Roach and Stacy also finished in double figures with 16 and 13 points off the bench, respectively.

The Lakers return to action on Thursday, Feb. 22 when they travel to face the Davenport Panthers with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
