Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Panthers

Laker Women's Basketball Fall to Panthers

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) women's basketball team (1-15, 0-7 GLIAC) fell to the Davenport Panthers (3-13, 1-5 GLIAC) in the closing seconds by a final score of 60-58 on Saturday.

Both teams went back-and-forth to start the game as Brittany Bowman (Kingsley, Mich.) hit from distance to put the Lakers up 7-4. A few minutes later, Grace Bradford (Maple City, Mich) and Breah Golden (Arcadia, Wis.) each hit a three to tie up the score at 15-15, but the Panthers would end the opening quarter with a two-point lead.

Davenport pushed ahead in the second quarter, but a 7-0 Laker run that featured a Bradford three-pointer put the Lakers back in front. However, the Panthers claimed a slim lead to close out the half.

The Lakers came out strong in the second half with an 11-1 run with threes from Jaden Wilder (Manton, Mich.) and CeCe Hacker (Omaha, Neb.), but the Panthers once again responded to end the quarter with a slim lead. Both teams would battle for the rest of the game with neither able to pull away. The Panthers would then go up by six points with just over 1.5 minutes to play, but the Lakers would not go down so easily with Hacker stealing the ball away and earning a trip to the free throw line. Bradford would then get fouled after securing a defensive rebound and cut the lead down to just a single point. However, despite the valiant comeback attempt, the Lakers' final attempt to take the lead at the buzzer fell just short.

Bradford led the way with a game-high 24 points while also leading all players with 16 rebounds for the double-double. Meanwhile, Wilder also finished in double-figures with 13 points.

The Lakers return to action when they travel to take on the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Thursday, Jan. 20 with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
