Laker Awards: Mattison Rayman, Terry McDermott Award

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Mattison Rayman has been awarded the 2019-20 Terry McDermott Award as the department's top first year female athlete, as voted on by the LSSU head coaches.

The Terry McDermott Award is given to the "first year female varsity letter winner at LSSU, who in the opinion of the coaches and the Athletic Awards Committee exhibits outstanding dedication, determination, self-sacrifice, and inspiration to Laker Athletics."

Rayman, a biology/pre-med major from Otsego, Mich., appeared in all 27 games for the Lakers this season, starting in every appearance. Rayman was one of five Lakers to play in every game this season and averaged 26.2 minutes per game. The freshman forward finished the season with 245 points, averaging 9.1 points per game in her first collegiate season. Rayman ranked second on the team in both categories. In her freshman season, Rayman led the team in free throws made with 94 and ranked second among her teammates in field goals with 74.

Rayman's most notable contribution during her freshman year was her dominance in rebounding. Rayman finished the season leading the team in total rebounds with 217, which is the most by a Laker since the 2009-10 season when Cassy Schemberger recorded 228. In addition, Rayman led the team in offensive rebounds with 50 as well as defensive rebounds with 167. The Laker freshman ranked fifth among all Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) players in rebounds per game with 8.0 as well as total rebounds. Rayman was tied for first in the GLIAC in defensive rebounds per game with 6.2.

In 27 games, Rayman posted a double-digit point total 15 times, including 22 points in her collegiate debut on October 29 in an exhibition game against Rochester (Mich.). In a non-conference game on December 20 at Cal Lutheran, Rayman netted 17 points for the Lakers in a 67-47 win. Against GLIAC opponents, Rayman scored double digit point totals 11 times.

Rayman posted 10 or more rebounds in eight games this season, including a season-best 20 in the Laker win against Cal Lutheran. In conference play, Rayman recorded 17 rebounds against Wayne State on December 7 in a 48-34 win. Rayman finished her first collegiate season with seven double-doubles.

This year's nominees for the Terry McDermott Female Athlete Award included Emily Kalinowski (volleyball) and Muskaan Ranjan (tennis).
