Women's Basketball Ready for a Pair of Home Games

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team will play their final home games of the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. as they face the  Northern Michigan Wildcats and on Saturday, Feb. 15th at 1:00 p.m. against the Michigan Tech Huskies. The Lakers will face these UP rivals in a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games in the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers (6-16, 2-13 GLIAC)

The Lakers are looking to snap their 11 game losing streak this weekend against two teams seated in the middle of the GLIAC North division. 

In the team's last meeting against Northern, the Lakers lost to the Wildcats by a score of 72-39. The Lakers were led on that day by guard Sadie Dewildt who had 10 points for her squad. 

On Jan. 16, the Lakers faced off against the Huskies in a very close matchup. The Lakers would lead 13-5 at the end of the first period after some great defensive play. However, the Huskies scored 12 unanswered points to end the half with the score 27-23. The Lakers would continue to try to climb back into the lead in the third quarter as the Huskies would pull out to a 13 point lead. The Final score was 62-52. Abigail Ostman recorded a season high 18 points in the contest. 

The Lakers will look to even the season series at 1-1 this weekend at home. 

Northern Michigan Wildcats (12-11, 9-6 GLIAC)

The Wildcats have won five of their last seven games including an impressive 60-55 win over Wisconsin-Parkside on Feb. 6. The Wildcats have been led recently by their senior Jessica Schultz who has been named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week this season. Schultz tallied 59 points and 16 rebounds on the weekend. Northern Michigan is coached by the 15 year veteran Troy Mattson. 

Michigan Tech Huskies (8-14, 6-9 GLIAC)

The Huskies broke a five game losing streak on Feb. 6th as they defeated Purdue Northwest by a score of 63-53. Michigan Tech was led by Molly Devalkeanere who scored 14 points in the matchup. The Huskies were also defeated on Feb. 8th by a score of 80-66 against Wisconsin Parkside. Michigan Tech's head coach is Sam Hoyt who is in her first season as the head coach for the Huskies.

Following this matchup against these GLIAC and UP rivals, the Lakers will travel to Wisconsin Parkside on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and Purdue Northwest on Feb. 22 at 1:00 p.m.
