Women's Basketball Falls to Saginaw Valley

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -  The Lake Superior State women's basketball team was defeated by the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 8 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game by a final score of 82-60 at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The game opened with the Cardinals coming out strong in the first quarter as the road team held a 24-7 lead over the Lakers. 

The Lakers would respond in the next quarter as the scoring was 20-18 in favor of the Cardinals. At 7:21 of the second quarter, Abigail Ostman would add a three-point jump shot to bring the score up to 12 for the Lakers. With half of the quarter played, the Lakers saw a spark from Rebecca Villanueva who made consecutive layups and Lexie Khon who added five points for the Lakers as the team chipped away at the lead that the Cardinals built (39-23). 

The third quarter would feature more high-scoring, evenly matched play from both teams as the Cardinals outscored the Lakers by a two point margin, 23-21. After falling behind 51-27 in the first two minutes of the third quarter, the Lakers would answer with a seven point run which included a three pointer from Claire Radtke. At 5:41 of the third quarter, the Lakers improved the score to 54-37 when Mackenzie Kalchik added three points for Lake State. 

Rebecca Villanueva would score five straight points for the Lakers in the closing minutes of the third followed up by another three point jump shot from Ostman with 1:46 left in the quarter. Despite the strong effort from the Lakers in the middle two quarters, the home squad headed into the final ten minutes of play trailing, 67-46. 

The fourth quarter continued the tight play from the previous two quarters as the team's posted a 15-14 score in the last ten minutes with the Cardinals holding the extra point advantage. The game ended in a final score of 82-60. 

Khon led the Lakers in scoring with 17 points while also contributing four assists and three rebounds in the game. Radtke posted a team-leading six rebounds while tying Khon for the team lead in assists with three. Mattison Rayman finished the game ranking second in points with 12 and rebounds with five.

The Lakers will continue their GLIAC homestand as they host the Wildcats from Northern Michigan at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 13. The Lakers will also welcome the Michigan Tech Huskies in a game slated for Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
