Women's Basketball Looks to Snap Streak at Home this Weekend

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team will compete in a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games this weekend. On Thursday, Feb. 6, the Lakers will host the Timberwolves from Northwood University at 5:30 p.m. The Lakers will also take on the Cardinals from Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 1:00 p.m. Both games will take place in the Ronald "Bud" Cooper Gymnasium. 

Lake Superior State Lakers (6-14, 2-11 GLIAC) 

The Lakers are hoping to end their streak of nine losses in this weekend's competitions. The Lakers faced off against two talented teams on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. In the matchup against Wayne State on Jan. 30, the Lakers were led in points by senior guard Claire Radtke who ranked first among her squad with 17 points. Senior forward Lexie Khon tallied wight rebounds in the game. The Lakers were then defeated by No. 2 Ashland University. Rebecca Villanueva led her team in points (13) and rebounds (4) in the loss. The Lakers will look to change these results in the matchups this weekend. 

The Lakers lost both matchups earlier in the season to both SVSU and Northwood. In the game against the Timberwolves, the Lakers were led by Khon who scored a dazzling 24 points in the contest with Mattison Rayman adding 12 rebounds. The Lakers would lose the final quarter by seven points to finish the game with a score of 52-42 in favor of Northwood. The Lakers were defeated in the last matchup against the Cardinals by a score of 59-41. The Lakers would trail by 11 points at halftime and be unable to recover. Claire Radtke scored a team high 14 points in the matchup. 

Northwood Timberwolves (6-15, 4-9 GLIAC)

The Timberwolves defeated both the Wayne State Warriors and the Michigan Tech Huskies in their matchups on the 30th of Jan. and Feb. 1st. Northwood outscored Michigan Tech by 10 points in the first quarter and never looked back. The Timberwolves are coached by Jeff Curtis who is the winniest coach in Northwood women's basketball history. 

Saginaw Valley State Cardinals (9-12, 5-8 GLIAC)

The Cardinals broke their four game losing streak in their last competition against the Huskies of Michigan Tech. The final score to the game was 85-77. Leading the Cardinals was Abbie Botz who scored 21 of SVSU's 85 points. The SVSU Cardinals are coached by the rookie head coach Jenny Pruett. 

Senior Day

During Saturday's double header, the Lakers will honor the senior class of both the men's and women's basketball teams. The women's team will honor Lexie Khon, Abigail Ostman, Claire Radtke and Morgan Villemure.

The Lakers will continue their GLIAC homestand as they host the Wildcats from Northern Michigan at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 13. The Lakers will also welcome the Michigan Tech Huskies in a game slated for Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
