Women's Basketball Records Conference Loss to Northwood on the Road

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game to the Northwood University Timberwolves on Saturday, Jan. 11 by a final score of 52-42.

Northwood would come out strong in the first quarter as the team outscored the Lakers 15-8 in the opening ten minutes. Senior forward Lexie Khon would make back-to-back three point shots for the Lakers to bring the team within two points at the 4:40 mark but the TImberwolves would pull away in the next few minutes of play. 

In the second quarter, the Lakers would respond by outscoring the Timberwolves 14-11 to make it a four point game at the close of the first half. Khon would score five points in the first four minutes of the quarter in a strong appearance for the Lakers. In the last three minutes of the half, the Lakers would go a perfect four-for-four on free throws and also add a layup from Rebecca Villanueva to head into the locker room trailing 26-22.

Khon brought the Lakers within two points in the first play of the third quarter as she made a layup and by the 4:59 mark in the quarter a layup and free throw by Khon gave the Lakers their first lead, going ahead 31-29. The Timberwolves would take back the lead quickly as the team outscored the Lakers 7-2 in the final 4:30 of play. 

In the final ten minutes of play, the Lakers were not able to stop Northwood's offense as the team would take a nine point lead by the halfway point. With three minutes left in the game, the Lakers would put together a strong effort in trying to comeback as they cut the lead down to four points. Northwood, however, would not let the Lakers get any closer and would score six points in the final minute of the game to win the conference game 52-42. 

Khon's impressive game totaled 24 points as she went 9-for-17 including 3-for-4 on three pointers while also adding four rebounds in the game. Freshman Mattison Rayman had a double-double in the match as she posted 10 points and a team-leading 12 rebounds against the Timberwolves.

The Lakers will continue the stretch of road games next weekend as the team heads to the western Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. Lake State will play the Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a game on Saturday, Jan. 18 against the Wildcats at 3:00 p.m.
