Women's Basketball Drops GLIAC Game to Saginaw Valley

SAGINAW, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals by a final score of 59-41 on Thursday evening in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conferenec (GLIAC) game in Saginaw, Mich. 

Lexie Khon would make a layup following the first jump ball of the game to put the Lakers ahead 2-0. The Cardinals would then take over the game as Saginaw went on an 18 point scoring run to take an 18-2 lead over the Lakers in the first quarter. In the closing minute, Claire Radtke made a three point three jump shot to set the score at 20-8 at the end of the opening quarter. 

SVSU would extend the lead to 16 points in the early stages of the second quarter before freshman Mattison Rayman made a pair of free throws and Radtke made her second three pointer of the game to make it 24-13. The rest of the second quarter saw similar play between the teams as the Lakers tried to close in on the Cardinals lead but the first 20 minutes of play ended with the Lakers trailing by 11 points (31-20). 

At 7:25 of the third quarter, the Cardinals would go ahead by 19 points, marking their widest lead of the game. Once again led by the play of Rayman and Radtke, the Lakers would tighten the Cardinals advantage to 12 points (41-29). The third quarter would end in a 49-36 score, setting the Lakers back by 13 points heading into the final quarter of play. 

In the last ten minutes of the game, the Lakers were unable to solve the Cardinals defense as they were limited to five points in the quarter. The Lakers would drop the game by a final score of 59-41.

Radtke finished the game with 14 points to lead the Lakers in the game. Rayman would continue her strong rebound play as she totaled six in the game as well as nine points, which ranked second on the team. Khon finished the game with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Lake State will travel to Midland, Mich. to take on the Northwood Timberwolves in another GLIAC match on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 1:00 p.m. game. 

The Lakers will continue the stretch of road games next weekend as the team heads to the western Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. Lake State will play the Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a game on Saturday, Jan. 18 against the Wildcats at 3:00 p.m.
