Women's Basketball Continues Conference Play this Weekend on the Road

Claire Radtke scored a game-high 15 points for the Lakers.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team will play two games this weekend against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponents as the team continues a five game stretch of road games. The Lakers will play the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals in Saginaw, Mich. on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 6:00 p.m. and then the Northwood Timberwolves in Midland, Mich. on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 1:00 p.m. 

The Lakers (6-6, 2-3 GLIAC)

The Lakers return to play following a weekend GLIAC split with a win against Davenport University Panthers on Thursday and a loss to Grand Valley State on Saturday. The Lakers are led by senior forward Lexie Khon who averages 11.6 points a game this season with a 57.7 shooting percentage. Khon has posted 10 or more points in seven of the Lakers games this season. Freshman Mattison Rayman sits in second on the team with 9.5 points per game this season while Claire Radtke has also been averaging 8.8 points a game for the Lakers this season. In the team's most recent win, Radtke posted a season-high 17 points for LSSU. Rayman leads the Lakers in rebounds per game with an average of 9.3, which is fifth in the GLIAC. 

Through 12 games this season, the Lakers have averaged 56.8 points per game, 32.8 rebounds per game and a 37.1 shooting percentage. 

Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals (6-7, 2-3 GLIAC)

The SVSU Cardinals, who enter Thursday's game with the same GLIAC record as the Lakers, are looking to snap a two-game losing streak. The Cardinals have three players who average over 10 points a game, which includes freshman Kaitlyn Zarycki, who is the team's leading scorer. Zarycki averages 11.3 points a game on a 48.0 shooting percentage. Aaliah Hill, a senior forward, ranks second on GVSU with 10.7 points per game while Maddie Barrie, a sophomore guard, rounds out the top three with 10.5 points per game this season. Junior forward Kaitlyn Geers averages 6.2 rebounds a game to lead the Cardinals. 

Through 13 games this season, Grand Valley State averages 65.2 points per game, 38.6 rebounds per game and a 42.7 shooting percentage.

Northwood University Timberwolves (2-11, 0-5 GLIAC)

The Northwood Timberwolves will host the Lakers on Saturday afternoon following a game against Ferris State on Thursday evening to open the weekend. The Timberwolves are still seeking their first conference win and are also looking to snap a two-game losing streak. Northwood is led by junior guard Ellie Taylor who leads the team with 14.0 points per game this season, which ranks 10th overall in the GLIAC. Taylor is shooting a 44.1 percentage in the nine games she has played in this season. In addition, Taylor also leads the Timberwolves in rebounds as she is averaging 4.6 per game in 2019-20.

Through 13 games this season, Northwood averages 61.5  points per game, 34.3 rebounds per game and a 38.0 shooting percentage.

The Lakers will continue the stretch of road games next weekend as the team heads to the western Upper Peninsula to take on Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. Lake State will play the Huskies on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. followed by a game on Saturday, Jan. 18 against the Wildcats at 3:00 p.m.
