Women's Basketball Posts First GLIAC Win in a Double-Digit Victory over Wayne State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team earned its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win of the season with a 48-34 victory over the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday, Dec. 7 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. With the conference win, the Lakers GLIAC record improves to 1-1 this season with a 4-3 overall record. 

In the low scoring first quarter, the Lakers would score nine unanswered points against the Warriors to lead 9-2. The Lakers would outscore the Warriors in the second half (12-10) to take a 21-12 lead into halftime. 

The two GLIAC opponents would continue the defensive battle in the second half as both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter. In the final quarter, the Lakers would secure the win as they outscored the Warriors 13-8 to clinch a win by a double-digit total (48-34). 

Lake State was led by senior forward Lexie Khon who scored a team-leadng 18 points in the win. Khon went seven-for-10 in field goals, while shooting three pointers at 50.0 percent. Khon would also add nine rebounds for the Lakers, three assists and a block in the win. Freshman Mattison Rayman recorded a double-double in the win as she scored 13 points as well as 17 rebounds, 13 of which came defensively. Sophomore guard Sadie DeWildt rounded out the Lakers top three scorers in the game as she posted nine points while also contributing three assists and two steals in the conference match.

The Lakers outrebounded the Warriors by a 43-37 margin and the Lakers had recorded an impressive 36 defensive rebounds in the game.
