Women's Basketball Wins Kids Day Game against Finlandia

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team defeated the Finlandia University Lions by a final score of 60-52 on Friday, Nov. 22 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium during Kids Day. 

With the win, the Lakers have closed out the non-conference portion of their season and will begin GLIAC play with a 3-2 overall record. 

The first quarter saw low scoring action between the two teams as the first ten minutes ended with LSSU ahead 13-10. In the second quarter, the Lakers would extend their lead as they would outscore Finlandia 17-8 to take a 30-18 lead into halftime. 

Finlandia would come out strong in the second half, outscoring the Lakers by an 21-15 margin to bring the Lions within six points. In the final quarter, the game's tight play would return with the Lakers pulling out the win by a final score of 60-52.

The Lakers offense was evenly distributed as Claire Radtke had 14 points, Lexie Khon had 13 points and Jenna Gregory had 13 points. Radtke also added six rebounds while Gregory would add three rebounds in the game. The Lakers rebound leader was freshman Mattison Rayman who recorded a total of seven in the game for Lake State. Off the bench, Rebecca Villaneuva tied Rayman for the team lead in rebounds while also adding eight points in the win.

The Lakers will begin their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play as they host Ashland on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 5:30 and Wayne State on Saturday, Dec. 7 at 1pm.
