Women's Basketball Bounces Back with a Win against Alderson Broaddus

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team responded with a 84-77 win against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers on Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers, who are hosting a two-day four team tournament, have evened out their record to 1-1 overall after recording their first win of the season.

The two teams played a tight first quarter with the Lakers outscoring the Battlers 20-18 in the opening ten minutes of play. Lake State would extend its lead through after dominating the second quarter by a total of 23-11 to hold a 43-29 lead following the conclusion of the first half. Alderson Broaddus would have a strong fourth quarter, netting a total of 28 points compared to the Lakers 19 points. The Lakers would hold on for the win, however, by a final score of 84-77 to clinch their first win of the 2019-20 season. 

The Lakers starting five would lead the team in the game, scoring all but six of Lake State's 84 points. Guard Jenna Gregory posted a team-high 19 points against the Battlers while also adding a team-leading eight assists. Lexie Khon would add 17 points in the game for the Lakers as she went 5-for-6 on field goals and 6-for-8 on free throws. Freshman forward Mattison Rayman continued her strong play in her first few games as a Laker with 16 points and eight rebounds. Claire Radtke, a senior guard, played all 40 minutes for the Lakers, putting up 14 points in the game and a team-leading 15 rebounds. Rounding out the Lakers starters was Sadie DeWildt who had 12 points and five rebounds in the win. 

The Lakers made 54.7 percent of their shots from the field and 43.8 percent of their three-pointers. Lake State went 19-for-24 on free throws against the Battlers.

The Lakers will continue their home schedule as they host Hillsdale College on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 4:00pm in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
