SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team lost their home opener against non-conference opponent, the Malone Pioneers, by a final score of 67-47. With the loss, the Lakers record falls to 0-1. The Lakers will look to even their record tomorrow afternoon against Alderson Broaddus at 1:00 p.m.
The Lakers and the Pioneers were evenly matched through the first half, as time expired with Malone ahead 27-24. Malone would outscore the Lakers by a total of 14-10 in the first quarter but LSSU would respond with a 14-13 adavantage in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the Pioneers would go a late run, outscoring the Lakers 23-13, to extend their lead to 50-37. Malone would secure the win with 17 points in the final ten minutes of play compared to the Lakers 10 points.
Senior forward Lexie Khon drove the Lakers offense in the game, as she posted a team-leading 24 points in the game as well as seven rebounds. Junior guard Rebecca Villaneuva (six points) and freshman forward Mattison Rayman (five points) rounded out the top three point scorers for Lake State in the game.
