SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team will open the 2019-20 season with an exhibition game against the Rochester University Warriors on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 5:30 p.m. in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Rochester competes as a member of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The Lake Superior State women's basketball team was ranked fifth in the 2019-20 GLIAC North Division Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The Lake Superior State women's basketball, led by third-year Head Coach Brandon Lokken, is set to open the 2019-20 season. The Lakers posted a 8-22 record in 2018-19, which was an improvement from previous seasons. LSSU will look to continue to build onto that record this season.

The Lakers schedule will include a home heavy start to the season as the team will play the first nine games of the season in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium and the month of November will feature five non-conference games before the first GLIAC conference match of the season against Ashland on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Only graduating two players last season, the Lakers roster will look familiar to last season's. Lake Superior State will be led by senior forward Lexie Khon, who is the team's reigning most valuable player with 12.6 points per game on a 44.8 shooting percentage in 2018-19, as well as senior guard Claire Radtke and senior forward Morgan Villemure. Khon and Radtke were the only two players on the team to start in all 27 games last season. Villemure is the only other returning player to play in all 27 contests in 2018-19.

Redshirt sophomore Sadie DeWildt, a guard, led the team with an average of 32.9 minutes per game last season and will be relied on once again this season for the Lakers. Redshirt junior Abigail Ostman who averaged 5.2 points per game last season will also be looked upon by Lokken and the Lakers to contribute.

Three freshmen will complete this year's roster. Ashtyn Bell, a guard from Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Kelly Olthof, a forward from Ferrysburg, Mich, and Mattison Rayman, a forward from Ostego, Mich. have joined the 2019-20 Laker roster. In addition, Lokken has added two new assistant coaches for the season: Cameron Clayton, previously an assistant coach at the University of Illinois Springfield and Allison Todd, previously an assistant coach at Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, Iowa.

Following tonight's exhibition, the Lakers will host a non-conference four-team tournament on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. The Lakers will play Malone at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and Alderson Broaddus on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
