SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to Northern Michigan 63-47 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Saturday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Lake Superior (7-16, 2-14 GLIAC) had the lead at the end of the first quarter of play, and through much of the second, but the Wildcats (18-6, 13-3 GLIAC) came away with the win.

The Lakers, under head coach Brandon Lokken, got off to a good start with six points from Claire Radtke and four points from Jenna Gregory in the opening quarter.  Although Northern Michigan chipped away at the Lake Superior State lead, the Lakers held the lead until free throws by the Wildcats' Jessica Schultz gave Northern Michigan its first lead of the afternoon.

With the Wildcats holding a 32-25 lead coming out of halftime, the game was within reach for the Lakers. The Lakers were then outscored 17-9 in the third quarter to make the score 51-34. The Lakers outscored the Wildcats 14-13 in the final quarter, but it was not enough to overcome their deficit as the Lakers lost 64-47.

From the field, the Lakers went 16 for 46 (34.8 percent), versus Northern Michigan, who was 25 for 50 (50 percent). Lake Superior outdid the visitors from behind the three point line, going 6 for 17 (35.3 percent) to the Wildcats' 3 for 11 (27.3 percent).

Statistically, the Lakers were led by Morgan Villemure with 10 points. Lexie Khon and Radtke each had five rebounds. For the Wildcats, Darby Youngstrom had a game-high 15 points, followed by Elizabeth Lutz and Lexi Smith, who had 12 points apiece.

Following the game, the two Laker seniors were honored on the court for their contributions to the women's basketball program at Lake Superior State. Christine Moffett of League City, Texas, and Courtney Jacobsen of Lafayette, Indiana, were each recognized for what they have brought to Laker women's basketball.

The Lakers hit the road for their next two games, facing Wisconsin-Parkside and Purdue Northwest before returning home to Bud Cooper Gymnasium for the regular-season finale against Ferris State on Thursday, Feb. 28. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the Norris Center Ticket Office or online.
