Lake Superior State Falls to Grand Valley State 71-50

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State women's basketball fell to No. 10 Grand Valley State University 71-50 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium. 

Lake Superior State (5-8, 0-6 GLIAC) trailed Grand Valley State (13-1, 6-0 GLIAC) 20-15 at the end of the first quarter. After the second quarter of play, Grand Valley led 39-27 heading into the half. 

In the third frame, Lake State was edged by Grand Valley 20-11, which brought the score to 59-38 going into the final quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams notched twelve more points to make the final score 71-50 in favor of GVSU.  

Sophomore guard Jenna Gregory led Lake State in scoring with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Lexie Khon, a junior forward, had the next-best point total with 11 – extending her double-figure point streak to seven games.

Resdshirt freshman guard Sadie DeWildt, redshirt sophomore guard Abigail Ostman and junior forward Morgan Villemure led LSSU in assists with three apiece. Gregory led the team in rebounds with six. 

Lake Superior State converted on 5-of-7 free throws, while Grand Valley was 18-of-26 from the free throw line.

LSSU made 37.3 percent of their shots from the field and GVSU shot 52.2 percent. 

Lake State returns to the court next week for a pair of road games against GLIAC opponents. The Lakers face Northern Michigan University on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. and Michigan Tech University on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m.

Their next home action is on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. when the Lakers host Wisconsin-Parkside in a conference matchup in Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
