Women’s Basketball Finishes 2018 with 87-69 Victory over Alma

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State women's basketball wrapped up 2018 with an 87-69 nonconference win over Alma College on Tuesday at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

The Lakers' (5-6) five wins this season are the most since the 2016-17 season when they finished with a 5-23 record.

Lake State controlled the game from the start – outscoring Alma, an NCAA Division III institution, 21-13 in the first quarter. The Lakers' lead continued to grow as they outscored the Scots 25-16 in the second quarter to take a 46-29 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Lakers maintained their lead as they used 13 players in the game. The Lakers outscored the Scots 22-19 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Scots edged the Lakers 21-19, but the game was well in hand as the Lakers used their bench and cruised to the 87-69 victory.  

Five Lake State players scored in double figures. They were: junior forward Lexie Khon (17 points), junior guard Claire Radtke (15), sophomore center Eileene Naniseni (13), sophomore guard Rebecca Villanueva (11) and redshirt sophomore guard Abigail Ostman (10).

The Lakers made 11-of-25 shots from behind the three-point line, including a 5-of-7 three-point shooting performance by Radtke.

LSSU tallied 23 assists in the game compared to seven turnovers. The Lakers also recorded seven steals.

Lake State converted 18-of-24 free throw attempts, while Alma made 12-of-16.

The Lakers return to action at Davenport University on Jan. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
