Women’s Basketball Drops GLIAC Opener at No. 1 Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio  –  Lake Superior State women's basketball suffered a 107-34 setback to No. 1 Ashland in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener on Thursday evening at Kates Gymnasium.

Lake Superior State (3-3, 0-1 GLIAC) was led offensively by junior forward Morgan Villemure, who scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Junior forward Lexie Khon added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting for LSSU.

Ashland (6-0, 1-0 GLIAC) was paced offensively by Hallie Heidemann's 22 points on 8-of-8 shooting, including 6-of-6 from behind the three-point line. Four other Eagles scored in double digits.

Lake State never led in the game as the Lakers trailed the Eagles 27-4 after the first quarter and 56-12 at halftime. The Lakers' deficit grew as they trailed 83-18 after three quarters and 107-34 at the end of the game.

Lake Superior State shot 27.7 percent from the field and 20.0 percent from behind the three-point line, while Ashland shot 59.7 percent overall and 56.0 percent on three-point shots.

Lake State made 6-of-8 free throw attempts and Ashland made 7-of-10.

The Lakers committed 29 turnovers, while forcing nine Eagle turnovers.

Lake State grabbed 27 rebounds and the Eagles tallied 38.

LSSU returns to the court at Wayne State at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Matthaei Center in Detroit.

The Lakers will play their first regular-season home game against Saginaw Valley State University on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
