Women’s Basketball Defeats Alderson Broaddus 77-64 for Third Consecutive Victory

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – Lake Superior State women's basketball overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Alderson Broaddus 77-64 in a nonconference game on Saturday. 

With the win, Laker Superior State (3-1) has won three consecutive games and is off to its best start through four games since 2014-15 when the Lakers also went 3-1 to start the season. The 2014-15 season is also the last time the Lakers had a three-game winning streak.

The Lakers fell behind Alderson Broaddus (0-3) 19-17 in the first quarter. The Lakers shot 7-of-11 (63.6 percent), including 3-of-5 (60.0 percent) on three-point shots, but they turned the ball over nine times, leading to five more shot attempts for the Battlers.

In the second quarter, each team scored 10 points to make the score 29-27 Battlers at halftime. Neither team shot well in the quarter as the Lakers shot 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) and the Battlers shot 3-of-15 (20.0 percent) from the field. Going into halftime, junior guard Claire Radtke and junior forward Lexie Khon shared the team lead in points (6).

After halftime, both teams bounced back to shoot 7-of-14 (50.0 percent) in the third quarter. The Lakers outscored the Battlers 25-22 in the quarter to take a 52-51 lead going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lakers pulled away as they outscored the Battlers 25-13 to make the final score 77-64. Lake State shot 8-of-13 from the field and made all three of its three-point attempts in the quarter. The Lakers also made six free throws in the quarter compared to none for the Battlers. Radtke scored eight points in the quarter, while Khon added six of her own.

Lake Superior State shot 51.0 percent from the field in the game, while holding Alderson Broaddus to 41.4 percent shooting. The Lakers had 16 turnovers total, but only two in the second half as they tied the game and then pulled away for the win. The Laker defense also forced 14 Battler turnovers.

Four Lakers scored in double figures: Radtke (16 points), Khon (15), sophomore guard Jenna Gregory (14) and sophomore center Eileene Naniseni (13). Naniseni also grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double.  

The Lakers return to the court for a nonconference game at the University of Indianapolis on Wednesday at 1 p.m. 

The Lakers will play their first regular-season home game against Saginaw Valley State University on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m.
