Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Walsh

CANTON, Ohio – Lake Superior State women's basketball lost its season opener to Walsh 95-58 in a nonconference neutral-site game at Malone University's Osborne Hall on Friday night. 

Lake Superior State (0-1) fell behind Walsh (1-0) 25-13 in the first quarter as the Lakers went 3-of-12 from the field. LSSU drew within five points of Walsh with the score 15-10 when Lexie Khon made a layup with 3:35 remaining in the quarter, but Walsh went on a 10-3 run to close out the quarter.

In the second quarter, Lake State was outscored 23-11 to make the score 48-24 at halftime. LSSU shot 2-of-15 from the field in the quarter, while Walsh shot 10-of-22.

During the third quarter, the Lakers and Cavaliers each scored 22 points to make the score 70-46 at the end of three quarters. Lake Superior State converted 16-of-19 free throw attempts in the period and 30-of-40 in the game. 

The Lakers were unable to come back as they were outscored 25-12 in the fourth quarter to make the final score 95-58 in favor of Walsh.

Lake State was led offensively by Rebecca Villanueva, who scored a team-high 12 points. Villanueva shot 3-of-7 from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed four rebounds in the game. In addition, Claire Radtke scored eight points — all from the free throw line — while garnering a team-high six rebounds.

The Lakers return to action in the GLIAC/GMAC Crossover on Saturday, when they face Malone University in a neutral-site game at 3 p.m. The game is being played at Walsh's Cecchini Center in North Canton, Ohio.
