TIFFIN, Ohio. — The Lake Superior State women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking, 53-52, loss at Tiffin Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
After trailing for much of the game, Lake State battled back in the fourth quarter exchanging leads serval times in the final minutes. Trailing, 51-49, with three seconds left in the game, Abigail Ostman sunk a three-pointer with 1.6 left to give LSSU the lead, 52-51.
The Dragons spoiled the what would have been the Lakers first road win of the season when Aida Santana Martin scored a layup off the inbound pass as time expired to give TU the win, 53-52.
With the loss, the LSSU falls to 2-19 overall on the year with a 1-15 mark in GLIAC competition. TU moves to 7-17, 3-13.
Lake State finished the game shooting 37.9 (22-of-58) percent from the field and 33.3 (6-of-18) percent from three-point range. TU shot 32.7 and 31.6 percent.
Lake Superior outrebounded Tiffin, 40-36, in the contest while committing 10 turnovers compared to the eight given up by Tiffin.
Senior forward Tamara Novic led the team with 14 points on 7-of-12 from the field to go along with 10 rebounds posting her fourth double-double of the season. Taylor Bryant finished with a career-high 12 points off the bench in the loss.
Kiley May led TU offensively with 22 points on the afternoon. Santana Martin finished with nine.
Lake Superior will remain on the road next week as they take on U.P. rivals Northern Michigan next Thursday (Feb.15) and Michigan Tech on Saturday (Feb.17) in conference action.
