SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—  The Lake Superior State women's basketball team grinded out a, 63-60, victory over Saginaw Valley Thursday evening to earn its first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season inside the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

Trailing by one point with 21 seconds left in regulation, sophomore guard Abigail Ostman nailed a triple to put the Lakers up, 62-60. A forced turnover in the final seconds and a free-throw from Lexie Khon iced the game for LSSU.

With the win, Lake State improves to 2-16 overall on the season and 1-12 in league action. The Cardinals slip to 5-15, 5-8.

LSSU finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from three-point distance. SVSU shot 43.1 and 21.7 percent.

Lake Superior was outrebounded, 29-25, in the contest but managed to outscore Saginaw Valley, 14-5, at the free-throw line.

Senior forward Natalie Peterson led charge offensively for the Lakers with a season-high 14 points off the bench. Peterson finished 4-of-7 from the field was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Khon finished with 13 points and led the team on the glass with six rebounds. Ostman finished with 11 points and was 3-of-5 from behind the arc.

Abby Duffy led the Cardinals offense with 18 points. Hannah Settingsgaard posted 17 points.
