SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich.—The Lake Superior State women's basketball team earned its first win of the season Thursday evening with an, 81-38, rout of non-conference Algoma (Ontario) inside the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

With the win, the Lakers improve to 1-15 overall on the season. The Thunderbirds slip to 2-15. Thursday's triumph also earned rookie head coach Brandon Lokken his first career win.

LSSU found a rhythm early on outscoring AU, 22-6, in the first 10 minutes of play and took a, 51-15, lead into the half. Lake State sealed it in the second half with a, 30-23, scoring advantage to finish with a season-high 81 points.

For the game, the Lakers shot 56.1 (32-of-57) percent from the field and 50 (9-of-18) percent from the, both equaling season-highs. The Thunderbirds finished at 25 and 28.6 percent.

Senior forward Tamara Novic led the Lake Superior offense with 13 points on the night. Jenna Gregory tallied 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

With the game in hand early in the second half, the Lake State bench saw extended playing time and scored 35 points in total.

Courtney Jacobsen led the reserves with nine points on 3-of-3 from the three-point line. Natalie Peterson and Taylor Bryant finished with seven.

Karly Fracainza led Algoma with 13 points offensively. Marlee Ball finished with 11.

The Lakers return to action on Saturday (Jan.27) as they return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Confrence competition with a match up at Ferris State.
