Women's basketball signs three during fall period
SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State women's basketball coach Jamie Pewinski has announced the signing of three players to a National Letter of Intent.
Forwards Ciara Zumer of Saginaw, Mich., and Maria Blazejewski of Beulah, Mich., and center Courtney Zammit of Sterling Heights, Mich., committed to LSSU during the fall signing period.
"We are extremely excited to introduce Courtney Zammit, Ciara Zumer and Maria Blazejewski as the newest members of our team," Pewinski said. "All three of them fit into our style of play perfectly and will be key pieces as we continue to grow and get better as a program."
Pewinski described Zammit, who is 6-2, as the only true center of the recruiting class. She averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds, one block and one steal per game last season for Sterling Heights-Stevenson. She shot 75 percent at the free-throw line and totaled 12 double doubles in 2007-08. Zammit was named to the All-Macomb Area Conference Red Division First Team and All-Macomb County Fourth Team, and received All-Detroit Free Press East Honorable Mention. The senior captain earned Titan awards for work ethic and leadership. She was also a three-year letter winner and conference most-valuable player in volleyball.
"Courtney is very athletic and will be able to get up and down the floor with our guards," Pewinski said. "But she will be expected to bang with the posts too."
Zumer (6-1) averaged 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks per game last season for Saginaw-Swan Valley. She earned All-Tri-Valley Conference First Team honors as a junior and was named to the second team as a sophomore after averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds per game. She is also a two-time Saginaw News Class B All-Area Team member. She contributed to Swan Valley's 2005 and '06 district titles.
Blazejewski (5-11) heads into her senior year at Benzie Central with 892 career points after averaging 18.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals, 2.4 assists and 1.9 blocks per game in 2007-08. As a junior, she was named to the All-Northwest Conference First Team, Traverse City Record-Eagle Dream Team and Detroit Free Press All-State Third Team. She also received Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Class B All-State Special Mention and academic all-state honors. She made the all-region team in soccer.
"Maria and Ciara are both very versatile players," Pewinski said. "They have played anywhere from point guard to center on their high school and AAU teams. That experience of playing different positions will allow them to be extremely successful at the ‘2, 3 or 4' in our system. Their length and skill will make us much deeper as a team and will help us continue to become a tough defensive team."
