Dragons beat Lakers on the perimeter
TIFFIN, Ohio - A Tiffin women's basketball team that averages 65 points per game and 36.1 percent from behind the arc made 9-of-16 three-pointers to beat Lake Superior State 75-59 on Saturday.
The Lakers (7-4 overall, 1-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) dominated the post, getting a combined 45 points from Jackie Armstrong and Alyssa VanderWal. It wasn't enough to make up for 4-for-29 shooting by the rest of the LSSU team.
Tiffin (4-6 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) overcame first-half foul trouble by making 7-of-12 three-pointers. The Dragons built a 44-32 halftime lead.
LSSU missed key shots during several opportunities to close within 10 points during the second half. With 11:02 remaining in the game, Armstrong and VanderWal accounted for 35 of the Lakers' 41 points.
Armstrong, who was the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week last week, went on to finish with a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds. She was 13-of-22 from the field. VanderWal added 18 points and nine rebounds, going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line and 6-of-8 from the field.
For the game, LSSU shot 39 percent from the field, including 3-of-18 from three-point range, and made 10-of-13 free throws. The Lakers out-rebounded Tiffin, 40-35.
Four players scored in double figures for Tiffin. Megan Fletcher led the Dragons with 18 points and five rebounds. Tiffin shot 40.3 percent from the field and made 16-of-18 free throws. The Dragons committed only seven turnovers to LSSU's 16.
The Lakers play in a GLIAC vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge Dec. 29-30 at Bellarmine. They take on the host team at 6 p.m. on the 29th.
