Laker women pick up first GLIAC win
UNIVERSITY CENTER - Senior center Jackie Armstrong and sophomore guard Nicole Marshall scored 25 points each to lead the Lake Superior State women's basketball team to an 89-69 victory over Saginaw Valley State on Sunday.
The Lakers (7-3 overall, 1-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) are in the midst of a seven-game stretch of road games spanning the month of December. They got off to an 0-3 start for the month, but turned things around Sunday by shooting 52.8 percent from the field -- nearing their season high of 52.9 percent.
Sunday's game, which was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, was moved so LSSU wouldn't have to travel to Ashland during final exam week. The Lakers' next game is Dec. 20 at Tiffin.
Marshall hit a career high in scoring by making 7-of-12 three-point shots. Armstrong had 11 rebounds for her third double double of the season. For the week she shot 51.5 percent from the field and averaged 22.5 points per game.
Ronlea Peterson and Allison Jaynes scored eight points each. Peterson also totaled a career-high 11 rebounds. The Lakers, who were out-rebounded 46-35 during Friday's loss at Ashland, dominated the boards at SVSU, 44-33.
LSSU led 35-27 at halftime and put the game out of reach during a 20-5 run that gave the Lakers a 57-36 lead with 12:32 remaining in the second half.
Lake Superior State made 9-of-19 three-point shots and 24-of-33 free throws. SVSU (1-6 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) shot 38.2 percent from the field, including 5-of-18 from three-point range, and made 12-of-19 free throws.
