LSSU joins GLIAC Pink Wave

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State University is joining the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pink Wave and Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone Initiative in its effort to wipe out breast cancer and honor breast cancer survivors and victims.
The Laker men's and women's basketball teams will be wearing pink t-shirts and are encouraging all fans and staff members to wear pink when they play host to Ashland on Saturday, Feb. 14. LSSU is one of more than 1,250 programs nationwide participating in the 2009 WBCA Pink Zone Initiative from Feb. 13-22.
Laker fans will also have a special opportunity to honor friends and family members who have had breast cancer by buying a box of chocolate of any size or value, and donating it as a prize during a raffle sponsored by the LSSU softball team. Boxes of chocolate can be delivered to the LSSU softball team during the LSSU men's and women's basketball games on Thursday, Feb. 12, or Saturday, Feb. 14, or to the Norris Center Ticket Office during business hours on Friday, Feb. 13. All of the boxes will be given away "in honor of" or "in memory of" a friend or loved one, and each donation will be announced during the games on Feb. 14.
Members of the LSSU softball will be selling hearts for $1, and the numbered hearts will serve as a ticket to win a box of chocolate. Hearts will be sold by the athletes throughout this week, during the Laker basketball games on Thursday, Feb. 12, during business hours at the Norris Center Ticket office on Friday, Feb. 13, and through the first half of the men's game on Saturday, Feb. 14. Anyone who buys a heart and does not attend the games on Feb. 14 will have one week to check the winning numbers and claim their prize at the Norris Center Ticket Office.
All proceeds from the heart sale will be donated to the WBCA/Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
