Lakers and Chargers are making their 12th GLIAC Tournament appearances

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State is making its 12th appearance in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament and will play eighth-ranked Hillsdale at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

LSSU (16-14 overall, 9-13 GLIAC), which has made the tournament field nine of the last 10 years, secured the No. 7 seed by beating Northern Michigan in its final regular-season game, while Hillsdale (24-3 overall, 19-3 GLIAC) is the No. 2 seed. The Chargers are also making their 12th tournament appearance. They won the title in 2002, and the Lakers claimed tournament victories in 2003 and '04.

In other first-round games, it's No. 8 seed Northern Michigan at No. 1 seed Michigan Tech; No. 6 seed Ferris State at No. 3 seed Northwood; and No. 5 seed Ashland at No. 4 seed Grand Valley State.

Hillsdale, led by all-American Katie Cezat, beat the Lakers twice during the regular season - 71-61 on Dec. 4 at Hillsdale and 61-49 on Jan. 31 in Sault Ste. Marie. LSSU senior forward Jaclyn Armstrong, who is the No. 2 scorer in the GLIAC behind Cezat, averaged 19.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game against the Chargers in those contests. Senior center Alyssa VanderWal added 9.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Cezat struck for 17 points and 21 rebounds in December, and 27 points and 23 rebounds in January. She leads the GLIAC in scoring (29.3 ppg) and rebounding (17.1 rpg).

LSSU snapped a three-game losing streak with Saturday's 63-48 victory over NMU. The Chargers have won three games in a row and 12 of their last 13. Their lone loss was a 69-68 setback at NMU on Feb. 19.
