Bellarmine overpowers LSSU at GLIAC vs. GLVC Classic


LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Bellarmine women's basketball team that has remained under the radar in the national polls made a statement at the regional level by beating Lake Superior State 95-59 Monday during the first round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference vs. Great Lakes Valley Conference Classic.

The Lakers gave up more points to Bellarmine (9-1) than any opponent this season. The Knights' only official loss in 2008-09 was by three points to Indianapolis. They also dropped a three-point exhibition decision to the University of Kentucky.

Nicole Marshall scored 18 points, and Jaclyn Armstrong added 13 to lead Lake Superior State (7-5). Alyssa VanderWal totaled nine points and six rebounds. The Lakers shot 43.1 percent from the field, including 3-of-17 from three-point range. They made 12-of-20 free throws and out-rebounded Bellarmine, 34-31.

Dana Beaver totaled 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Taylor Kopple added 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Bellarmine. Kopple averages 19.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, while Beaver is an 8.7 ppg scorer.

The Knights, who average 89.6 points per game, shot 51.7 percent from the field, including 14-of-29 from three-point range. They made 21-of-31 free throws and forced 27 Laker turnovers.

The Lakers, who are 2-1 this season against GLVC opponents, conclude a month-long, seven-game road stretch at 1 p.m. Tuesday against St. Joseph's. They play host to Saginaw Valley State at 1 p.m. Saturday in their GLIAC home opener.

During Game 2 of the GLIAC vs. GLVC Classic, Northwood defeated St. Joseph's, 95-43.
