David Mitter Represents LSSU at the NCAA DII Cross Country National Championships

SAINT LEO, Fla. - Lake Superior State men's cross country runner David Mitter finished 83rd out of 245 finishers at the 2021 NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 20 at The Abbey Course in Saint Leo, Fla. 

The Howell, Mich. native crossed the finish line with a time of 32:16.4 for an 83rd place finish among the top distance runners in the nation. Mitter had a strong start to the race as he held the 37th place spot at the 1.3k mark with a time of 3:46.9, and remained in the top 50 runners through the first 4.3k (13:07.7). By the 8k point of the race, Mitter held a spot in the top third of finishers (72nd) with a time of 25:30.6. 

Mitter qualified for an at-large bid for the championship race after his performance at the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Championship on Saturday, Nov. 6. The senior distance runner finished 12th overall in the race with a personal-best time of 30:46.4 in the 10k run.

The senior has now represented the Lakers on the national stage on two occasions as Mitter also qualified for the NCAA DII National Championship as a sophomore in 2018. Mitter is the first Laker to compete at the national championships since 1993 when Gary Loubert participated for LSSU. At the 2018 championship, Mitter finished 121st out of 261 participants with a time of 34:51.5 in the race.

This year's individual winner was Isaac Harding, a senior at Grand Valley State, who finished with a time of 29:58.3 while the GVSU Lakers also won the team championship with 43 points.
