Cross Country Opens Season at the Warrior Challenge

NEW BOSTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams returned to competition after nearly two years at the Warrior Challenge hosted by Wayne State University on Friday, Sept. 10 at Willow Metropark in New Boston, Mich. 

The event opened with the women's 5,000 meter race at 5:30 p.m., and the Lakers placed sixth among the competing teams. LSSU was represented by an all-freshman roster with Josie Morrow leading the way with a time of 27:15.8. Gwen Phillips followed with a time of 29:30.9 while Sydney Kapushinski rounded out the Lakers top three finishers with a time of 29:49.7. Katelyn Moore posted a time of 30:59.4 while Olivia Stevens totaled a time of 33:14.4 in her first collegiate meet. 

The men's 8,000 meter race followed with a start time of 6:15 p.m, and the team placed sixth in the event. Senior David Mitter had a strong race to open the season, finishing fourth among the 122 participants with a time of 25:13.4. Ryan O'Neill was the next Laker to cross the finish line as he posted a time of 28:46.6 in his first collegiate cross country race. Senior Kendal Delpiere followed with a time of 28:54.4. The remaining eight Lakers all competed in their first cross country meet at the collegiate level. Reese Camp (28:55.6), Dominic Comfort (29:06.6), Roy Bowman (29:17.4), Ethan Nachazel (29:27.2), Devlin Taube (30:55.2), Aaron Nachazel (30:55.2), Skylar Williams (33:27.8), and Zach Hanson (39:35.9) rounded out the Laker finishers.

The Lakers will compete in the Michigan State's Spartan Invitational next Friday, Sept. 17. The meet is set to be held at Michigan State's Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
