Cross Country Runs in the 2019 GLIAC Championships

WESTVILLE, Ind. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams competed in the 2019 GLIAC Cross Country Championships in Westville, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 26. David Mitter earned First Team All-GLIAC Honors as he finished among the Top-Ten finishers in the race. Mitter posted a time of 24:37.9 in the 8,000-meter distance to place tenth overall among his conference competitiors. 

The men's team finished in tenth place with 284 points at the 8,000-meter distance while the women's team finished in eleventh place with 331 points at the 6,000-meter distance. The Lakers had a strong showing from both teams in the event as 11 of the 12 Laker athletes set new personal records.

On the men's side, all six runners set either a collegiate personal record or a season personal record. Mitter led the way for the Lakers as his time was almost 40 seconds faster than his previous 8,000-meter best at the 2018 GLIAC Cross Country Championships when he ran a 25:16.6. Junior Peter Shambaugh was the next Laker finisher as he posted a collegiate personal record of 26:52.0 to finish 85th overall. Junior Kendal Delpiere set a 2019 season personal record with a a time of 27:10.0 to finish 89th overall. Freshmen Daniel Anderson and Kevin Garland each had a solid first GLIAC Championship race as Anderson's 29:59.4 and Garland's 30:44.3 were both collegiate personal records for the runners. Laker sophomore Eric Somsky rounded out the team's runners as he finished with a time of 34:10.4 to set a new collegiate personal record.

The Laker women's team ran well in the GLIAC's as four athletes set collegiate personal records and one set a new season personal record. Senior Rebecca Lathrop was the first Laker female to cross the finish line as she placed 78th overall with a time of 24:41.4. Junior Alexis Passino's time of 25:11.9 was good for 87th place overall and a collegiate personal record. Sophomore Leah Bell was the third Laker female to complete the distance as she finished 91st overall with a collegiate personal record time of 25:32.2. Junior Emily Merten also set a collegiate personal record as her time of 25:45.3 placed her as the 95th finisher. Sophomore Caitlyn Schumann posted a collegiate personal record of 27:05.4 to finish 109th overall. Senior Melody Perrin rounded out the female team's finishers as she set a new season personal record with a 28:15.3.

The Lakers will look to build on their success at the GLIAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 9 as they are set to compete in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships at Angel Mounds in Evansville, Indiana.
