Lakers Ready for the 2019 GLIAC Cross Country Championships

The men's cross country team starting a race.

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - After a short break from action, the Lake Superior State University men's and women's cross country teams will participate in the 2019 GLIAC Cross Country Championships hosted by Purdue University Northwest in Westville, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 26. The women's 6,000 meter race will begin at 11:00am followed by the men's 8,000 meter race at 11:45am. All-GLIAC conference awards will be up for grabs on Saturday. 

About the Race

The Lakers will see some familiar faces in this race on Saturday as every team the Lakers will run against this weekend have competed with the Lakers at least once this year already. This race will be run throughout the entire Westville campus of Purdue-Northwest. 

Women's 6,000-Meter Race:11:00am

Men's 8,000-Meter Race: 11:45am 

Women's Team 

The Lakers will be eyeing the awards podium this Saturday while they run the 6,000 meter race. This race follows the Lakers finishes at the Lewis Crossover where the women's finishes and times were as follows; Rebecca Lathrop - 183rd overall (25:42.6), Alexis Passino - 210th overall (26:26.6), Emily Merten - 239th overall (29:14.0), Caitlyn Schumann - 240th overall (29:24.8), Leah Bell - 241st overall (29:45.5), and Melody Perrin - 244th overall (31:07.4). The Lakers will look to build off of these times at the GLIAC Championships.

Men's Team

The men will be led by senior David Mitter who was the only Laker to gain All-GLIAC honors last season when he ran the 8,000 meters in 25:16.6, enough for FIrst Team honors and a personal record. This race also follows the team's participation in the Lewis Crossover on Oct. 12. The men's finishes and times were as follows; David Mitter - 24th overall (25:58.9), Kendal Delpiere - 198th overall (28:35.0), Peter Shambaugh - 201st overall (28:46.6), Daniel Anderson - 223rd overall (32:18.8), Eric Somsky - 226th overall (35:16.4), and Andrew Giddens - 228th overall (36:49.4).

Up Next

The results from the GLIAC Championships will determine which Laker athletes will qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships. That race will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9 in Evansville, Ind., hosted by Evansville University.
