Mitter Places First Overall, Lathrop Places Tenth Overall at Wayne State's Warrior Challenge

NEW BOSTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams posted strong individual finishes from junior David Mitter who finished first overall at the men's 8,000-meter distance while senior Rebecca Lathrop placed tenth among women at the 6,000-meter distance at the Second Annual Warrior Challenge hosted by Wayne State University in New Boston, Mich. on Saturday, Sept. 21.

The event began with the women's 6,000-meter race at 10:30 a.m., and the Lakers placed fourth among the five teams competing. Lathrop continued her strong start to the 2019-20 season as she finished in the top 10 with a time of 24:27.1. Lathrop was the first Laker female to cross the finish line. Junior Alexis Passino followed for the Lakers with a time of 26:41.1 which was good for 28th place overall. Rounding out the top three finishers for Lake State was junior Emily Merten who finished 30th overall with a time of 27:16.8. The other female runners for Lake State were sophomore Leah Bell (33rd overall, 28:05.6), freshman Abigail Kline (35th overall, 29:35.2), sophomore Caitlyn Schumann (36th overall, 30:12.8) and senior Melody Perrin (38th overall, 31.18.5). 

The men's 8,000-meter event followed with a start time of 11:15 with Mitter recording the day's fastest time to win the race. Mitter, who has continued to lead the way for the Lakers, recorded a time of 26:11.4 during a race day that was very hot and humid. Junior Kendal Delpiere followed Mitter to place second among the Laker men with a time of 28:29.9 which placed him at 22nd overall. Junior Peter Shambaugh's 30:36.3 race time was good for 44th overall, freshman Daniel Anderson finished 57th overall with a 32:34.3 time and freshman Kevin Garland placed 59th with a time of 33:19.2.

The Lakers will have a few weeks before they resume competition on Saturday, Oct. 12. Lake Superior State will take part in the Fifth Annual Conference Crossover Cross Country Invitational hosted by Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.
