SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Lake Superior State men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the 2018 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Hayden Park in Hillsdale, Michigan.

The men are scheduled to race a 10K at 10:30 a.m. and the women are slated to race a 6K at 11:45 a.m.

A total of 78 cross country programs from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Great Midwest Athletic Conference and the Great Lakes Valley Conference will be competing at the championships.

The top three teams from the regional meet will automatically advance to the championship finals, which are being held at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Dec. 1. In addition, 10 at-large teams will be selected by the NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Committee. There is no limit to the number of at-large teams that may be selected from any given region.

The top two individuals from the event, who are not part of a qualifying team, will automatically advance to the championship finals. All individuals, who finish in the top five at the regional meet and are not part of a qualifying team, will automatically advance to the championship finals. The next eight individuals will be selected at-large.

The team and individual winning the regional will be recognized and presented with an NCAA trophy.

The Lakers last competed at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Nov. 3. David Mitter was the top finisher for the Lakers in the 8K men's race as he finished 10th overall with a time of 25:16.6 to earn First Team All-GLIAC honors.

On the women's side, Lydia Heimonen led the way for the Lakers as she finished 72nd with a 6K time of 24:38.4.
