Laker Men's Tennis Defeat Michigan Tech 5-2

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's tennis team (5-3, 1-0 GLIAC) opened up conference play with a strong 5-2 decision over the visiting Huskies of Michigan Tech (3-11, 0-1 GLIAC) on Saturday.

The Huskies were able to get out to an early 1-0 advantage in the match after taking the top two doubles matches, but the duo of Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain) and Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) put together a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 doubles match to take some momentum into singles play.

The Lakers would then put together several strong performances in singles on their way to winning five of their six matches with the only loss requiring multiple tiebreakers to decide.

Driss Sedrati (Casablanca, Morocco) got things started for LSSU with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot, and Limongi closed out a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the battle of No. 1s shortly thereafter to put the Lakers in front. Then, after grinding out a 7-5 win in his first set, Stefan Andrei (Galati, Romania) claimed his second set by a margin of 6-3 to push the Huskies to the brink. Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) would then secure the first conference win of the season with his team after besting his opponent by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Velasco also picked up a singles win on the day with a 6-4, 7-6(5) showing at the No. 6 spot.

The Lakers return to action on Friday, April 5 when they travel to take on No. 24 Wayne State with the first serve scheduled for 10 a.m.
