Laker Men's Tennis Face Their First Setback of the Season at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's tennis team (2-1) fell to the Hillsdale Chargers (3-3) by a final score of 4-2 on Saturday.

Both teams battled early in doubles play as the pairing of Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) and Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain) came away with a 6-3 win in the No. 3 doubles match, but the Chargers responded by narrowly claiming the No. 1 doubles spot 6-4. With the doubles point on the line, Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat, Spain) and Driss Sedrati (Casablanca, Morocco) fought their way to a 6-6 stalemate, forcing a tiebreaker to decide the early advantage. However, Hillsdale was able to claim the early lead by the narrow margin of three points.

The Chargers extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at the top singles position, but the Lakers rallied to tie up the match at 2-2. Stefan Andrei (Galati, Romania) rallied from down 4-0 in the second set to win in straight sets in the No. 2 singles match, and Velasco shook off dropping the opening set of the No. 4 singles match on his way to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory. However, Hillsdale managed to secure the match with wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots.

With the match clinched, the No. 6 singles match was left unfinished, but Sedrati was leading one set to zero at the time of the match's conclusion.

The Lakers will now turn their attention to the 2024 PTR Spring Tennis Fest where they will first face off against Assumption on March 4.
