Laker Men's Tennis Win 4-3 Thriller at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Superior State (LSSU) men's tennis team (1-0) opened their 2024 spring season with a thrilling 4-3 victory on the road over the Northwood Timberwolves (0-1) on Friday.

The Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after sweeping doubles play as the pairings of Maxence Hamon (Montreal, Que.)/Lezan Koyuncu (Cologne, Germany) and Jordi Fraile Raton (Sant Cugat del Valles, Spain)/Driss Sedrati (Casablanca, Morocco) each earned 6-3 victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots, respectively. Lluc Limongi Ollers (Mallorca, Spain) and Raul Velasco Garcia (Barcelona, Spain) would then complete the sweep in doubles after closing out a 7-5 win at the No. 2 spot.

The Lakers would carry their momentum into singles play as Ollers and Stefan Andrei (Galati, Romania) took the top-two singles positions in straight sets. Hamon would then secure the victory with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win in the No. 3 singles match to give LSSU their first win of the season. 

Northwood was able to take the remaining three matches, but Raton and Velasco were each able to take their matches the distance by forcing a third set. 

The Lakers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 when they take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils with the first serve scheduled for 4 p.m.
