Laker Tennis Closes Regular Season with Home Sweep over Michigan Tech

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University men's and women's tennis teams closed out the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season with a pair of wins over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, April 23 in the Arbuckle Student Activity Center in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The men's team defeated the Huskies by a final score of 6-1 while the women's team posted a 5-2 win against Michigan Tech. 

The men's team opened the competition against the Huskies by clinching the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. The Lakers top doubles pair of Juho Kantola and Aaron Osmond won their match by a 6-1 score while the Lakers third pair of Krishan Taneja and Ali Sahibzada won their match by a 6-4 score. 

In singles play, the Lakers won five of the six matches and all of the singles matches were done in two sets. Kantola, playing in the No. 1 singles spot for the Lakers, won his match in decisive fashion after posting consecutive 6-1 set wins. 

Taneja won by scores of 6-2 and 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match while Osmond won the No. 4 singles match by identical scores (6-0, 6-2) for the Lakers. Ali Sahibzada won the No. 5 match in two sets (6-3, 6-2) and Diego Penz capped off the Laker 6-1 win with scores of 6-1 and 6-3 in the No. 6 match.

Xavier Vicent Navarro lost a tight match in the No. 2 matchup after falling in the first set in a tiebreaker and dropping the second set by a 7-5 score. 

The women's team gave up the doubles point to the Huskies after falling two sets to one in the first part of the competition. The Lakers second pair of Keegan Malpass and Nadege Koua won their match by a score of 6-1 in the doubles competition. 

In singles play, only four matches were played as injuries prevented the Huskies from playing in the No. 5 and 6 singles matches. Nadege Koua dropped the No. 1 singles match to Dominika Bobik by scores of 6-2 and 6-4. Milena Baigorria, who played in the No. 2 singles match, won her match by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. Muskaan Ranjan earned a three-set win for the Lakers in the No. 3 match after winning the first set in a tiebreaker and taking the third set by a score of 10-2. Claudia Sole won in two sets in the final singles match that was played as she posted back-to-back 6-1 singles scores for the Lakers.

What's Next

Following the final day of the GLIAC regular season, the Lakers will await the final standings ahead of the GLIAC Championships. The GLIAC Championships are scheduled for Friday, April 29, Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1 at the Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
