Preview: Laker Tennis Set to Open Spring Season this Weekend

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University Men's and Women's Tennis teams will open their spring schedule this weekend on the road. The men's team will play Cornerstone University on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6:00 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich. Both the men's and women's teams will compete against the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 5:00 p.m. in Southfield, Mich. 

The Laker men's team will be represented by Logan Brown, Juho Kantola, Aaron Osmond, Diego Penz, Harris Rehan, Ali Sahibzada, Krishan Taneja, Raul Velasco Garcia and Xavier Vicent Navarro. The men's team returns to competition for the first time since early October, when the team posted a 7-0 win over Aquinas College. 

The Cornerstone Golden Eagles will also play for the first time since the fall season and enter the spring season ranking third in the WHAC Preseason Poll with 32 points. The Golden Eagles are led by Mateo Jimenez, a senior from Yopal, Colombia, who played in the team's No. 1 singles spot during the fall season. The Lakers will then take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils who totaled a 5-5 record during the fall season. Lawrence Tech is led by senior Alexander Tammaro and junior Pedro Garcia-Orellana. 

The women's team will be represented by Milena Baigorria, Julia Fraile-Raton, Riley Gilman, Nadege Koua, Keegan Malpass, Muskaan Ranjan, Claudia Sole, and Maddie Whip. The women's team will open their spring season on Saturday evening after posting a 1-0 record during the fall season after defeating Aquinas College by a final score of 6-1. 

The Lakers will take on a women's Blue Devil team that posted a 5-2 record during the fall season, led by freshman Olga Aliagas Mejina, who was ranked 45th nationally in December. Mejina finished the fall season with a 11-1 mark in singles play, which included a 4-0 record when playing in the No. 1 spot. 

Looking ahead, both teams will continue their non-conference seasons on the road next weekend as the teams are scheduled to take on Findlay on Friday, Feb. 11 and Tiffin on Saturday, Feb. 12.
