Men's Tennis Posts Solid Showing at the ITA Midwest Regionals

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Midwest Regionals in Allendale, Mich. on Friday, Sept. 24, Saturday, Sept. 25, and Sunday, Sept. 26.

In the doubles competition, the Lakers were represented by Juho Kantola and Harris Rehan in the A draw. The pair fell in the first round of the main bracket by a score of 8-4 but went on to have a strong showing in the Draw A Consolation bracket making it to the final before being defeated. In the B bracket of doubles play, Raul Velasco Garcia and Xavier Vicent Navarro won their opening match (9-7) but fell in the second round. Aaron Osmond and Ali Sahibzada, who were also playing in the B draw, fell in the opening round. The Lakers final doubles pairing of Krishan Taneja and Diego Penz played in the C bracket and posted an impressive 8-0 win in the opening round before falling in a tiebreaker during the next round. 

In Draw A of singles competition, Kantola was the highest seeded Laker and won his first match by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Kantola fell in the second round. Vicent Navarro dropped his first match in the main bracket and would fall in the opening round of the Draw A consolation bracket. 

In the main draw of the B competition, all three Lakers (Sahibzada, Velasco Garcia, and Taneja) won their opening matches but fell in the second round of the bracket. 

Rehan, Brown, Penz and Osmond each represented the Lakers in the C bracket of singles play. Rehan and Brown each fell in the second round but moved onto the C consolation bracket. Rehan won his first match in the tiebreaker third set while Brown, in his Laker debut, fell in the first round. Penz, who had a bye in the first round, advanced to the third round after winning in three sets (7-6 (1), 2-6, 10-5) and lost in the third round in the tiebreaker. Osmond, who also made his LSSU debut at the ITA's advanced to the Draw C finals where he was defeated. Osmond won all four matches in decisive fashion en route to the title match.
