Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season with a 6-1 Win at Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's tennis team finished the regular season with an impressive 6-1 win over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Monday, April 19 at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich. Through nine matches this season, the Lakers hold a 2-7 overall record and a 2-5 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Lakers took the doubles point against the Huskies as LSSU won two of the three matches. Lake Superior State's top pair of Juho Kantola and Seth Pinnoo won their match in a tiebreaker by a score of 7-6. The Laker duo of Krishan Taneja and Xavier Vicent Navarro won their match by the same score (7-6) as the first match. In the third doubles match, the Laker pairing of Diego Penz and Harris Rehan fell by a score of 6-4.

The Lakers won five of the six singles matches against Michigan Tech to secure the conference win. All five of Lake Superior's victories came in two-set wins over the Huskies. Kantola, the Lakers top single player, won his match in two sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. In the No. 3 matchup, Taneja recorded back-to-back 6-2 set wins to take the match. Rehan, playing in the No. 4 match, won the opening set by a score of 6-3 and followed with a 6-2 set win for the match victory. 

Seth Pinnoo, a senior playing in the No. 5 match, posted 6-1 and 6-3 scores in his sets to register the match win in his final regular season match as a laker. Penz, who played in the No. 6 spot for the Lakers with Ali Sahibzada out of the lineup, won his match by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

Vicent Navarro, the Lakers No. 2 singles player, dropped his set after a hard-fought match against Eli Pinnoo, the younger brother of Seth Pinnoo. Vicent Navarro won the first set (6-3) but fell in the tiebreaker of the second set. The decisive third set ended in a score of 15-13 as Pinnoo took the match win for the Huskies. 

Looking Ahead

The GLIAC 2021 Men's Tennis Tournament is set to take place from Friday, April 23 through Sunday, April 25 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich.
